Description
According to the provisional data reported by DGEG for the year of 2018, primary energy consumption in Portugal decreased by 2.8% when compared to 2017. This was due to the fact that hydroelectric production was higher than the previous year, which allowed the reduction of coal and natural gas consumption for electricity production. Final energy consumption increased by 1.4%.
However, due to climate change it is expected that in the coming years the Iberian peninsula will experience periods of drought, which will lead to a decrease in hydroelectric production.
